  1. I have an order in for a 20GB iPod and am awaiting it’s arrival (hopefully earlier than the 4-6 week estimation). In the meantime however I am completely confused about what accessories I need along with the iPod. Is the dock neccessary in order to charge the iPod? Does the dock come with its own wires or do I need these dock to firewire cables? Any advice would be much appreciated…

  2. I bought the iPod 20GB. It is a beautiful machine. Apple has long been known for its excellent design. Unfortunately, I needed to return it.

The biggest problem was the system requirements for connection: Firewire or USB 2.0. I rely on transporting a lot of data files from work to home and back. I have Firewire in both places but not USB 2.0 so, in order to use the device at both locations, I’d have to carry the Firewire cable with me all the time.

I also had some problems transferring files (the unit would lock up after transferring a few files and I’d have to reboot.) I have USB and IEEE devices that work on my PC, but the iPod did not.

I opted for another small HD MP3 player that could support USB 1.1 and life is good.

  3. The iPod is AWESOME!!! I’m gonna share what i like and what i don’t

    Good:

It’s real easy to use. The games are pretty good-not worth $300 though. The iPod syncs to my XP very easily and the click wheel is great. It’s really awesome, light, and fits in your pocket. I think the headphones are great and the sound is awesome!

    Bad:

This awesome product has some lows. For one it scratches very easily on both sides. Although not too many cases are out yet, when they come out, i’d buy one. Another is that it is a bit overpriced-but worth it. Some of the accesories are overpriced. So if you know you want one, look around as many companies make the same things, but for different prices.

Overall, it’s great and i’d recommend it to anyone. Make sure you have an idea of how much music you have so you don’t get too much or too little.

  4. I just took my new 20 gig ipod out of the box, uploaded one cd to it and then tried to play it. The first two songs played fine, song number three got stuck and no matter what I did, I could not get the ipod to turn off. After waiting for 30+ minutes on the apple support line, they told me how to reboot it, but by that point the battery had died. So I eventually rebooted my ipod and again, uploaded a different cd and it got stuck after the second song, with the hard drive just spinning away.

Now, I tried to return this defective ipod and they will not exchange it if it is engraved. This is Apples little ploy to make you keep the ipod. So, DO NOT GET YOUR IPOD ENGRAVED, unless you are completely sure you are going to keep it no matter what. What would it cost Apple to replace the back of the ipod if I exchanged it, maybe a couple dollars. I dont know, but it is very bad customer service. And speaking of customer service, there really isn’t any. I was one the phone today for a few hours trying to return my new ipod for repair, and finally gave up. And your local Apple store is no help, as they told me I would have to thru the online store to return it. Bad, bad, bad service all the way around.

Save your money and buy a Dell or Iriver.

  5. I have owned this item since July 25,2004. It’s great, but needs to be better.

The good: 1. Stylish design; 2. Ease of use; 3. Being able to play various formats; 4. Fast data transfer using USB2.0; 5. Can be used as an external hard drive.

The bad: 1. Same battery as 3rd generation, but come with better battery management software, no matter how hard I try, it never ran more than 5 hours with one full charge; 2. Doesn’t have custom EQ; 3. A little heavy; 4. Limited accessoraries, no FM tuner available on the market.

Sony is introducing their new HD player, but when I think of Sony’s proprietary music format, takes long time to convert and slow to transfer, forget it…
