  1. This is theoretically a great device, except … I use macs, so much of what it can do, I can’t use it for. I knew that and was perfectly happy to buy a replacement for my old one to record live music. Unfortunately, this is a new recording technology that is incompatible with my other minidisc recorder. This one can play my old minidiscs, but I can’t play the new hi-mds on my old one. All I get is an annoying beep. You can record in the old mode with a computer (non-mac), but why wouldn’t you just record on your computer then? As many reviewers have pointed out, this product can’t compete with the i-pod, and shouldn’t try. Sony messed up a good product.

  2. This is a great piece. But I needed one with a microphone line input and found thi to have the same features plus a line in http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000F55G5Y/

  3. The battery is so poor, I wonder if it may infact be defective. The user interface is awkward, clumsy and hard to use. And then after 5 months of usage, the thing finally broke completely. waste of money. stay away.

  4. The SonicStage software is terrible, and you can’t use anything else to download music to the device. It’s slow, it hangs, and it wastes a lot of harddrive space converting everything.

  5. I have had a net md minidisc player for around a year until it started malfuncioning. Then I just gave up and wanted to look for something that is more practical and easier to use.

I bought a ipod nano and wow what a difference. I don’t really care for all the functions that the nano has because it is used for music. But one thing that I have noticed was how easy it is to transfer songs by itunes. It is soooooooooooooooooo much easier and faster than sonicstage. Sonicstage is just a burden.

Let me just say that the transfer speed from the ipod nano comparing to the minidisc players is such a difference. My ipod transfers 2 songs per second on it comparing to the awful slowness of the sonicstage. While writing this review I am going on a trip so I decided to bring my minidisc player instead of my expensive nano. I downloaded 22 songs onto the minidisc player and it took 20 minutes! I understand that the new HIMD’s have a 100x transfer rate but the program never changed since I am using sonicstage 3.3. What I am trying to say is that the minidisc player might be functional since it is rather durable and consists of high battery life. But the software that is comes with, and you can’t use anything else! That is unacceptable.

I hope that you listen to this because you hear many complaints of sonicstage on the reviews on amazon but it really is that bad.

Itunes is one of the best digital music programs that involve transfering to portable devices (only ipods) but I guarantee that you would not be dissapointed.
